Sandpipers

Scolopacidae

Curlew Sandpiper Erólia ferruginea A rare bird indeed. This very rare visitor to the lower and western 48 is similar in size and shape to the Dunlin. Adults sport the rich cinnamon color in summer while winter plumage is grey and white. This Old World species breeds solely in northern Siberia. It's presence in sunny warm Goleta caused quite a stir for local and out of town birders.

For whatever reason the sludge ponds of the Goleta Sanitation District appealed to this rare visitor between August 10-12, 1999 near the Santa Barbara/Goleta airport.
