With mixed emotions I list this location. Mauna Kea is a sacred site to native Hawaiians, similar to St. Peter's for Catholics; Mecca for Muslims and the Wailing Wall for Jews. It is a question of mythology versus ideology for me.I have come to think of Hawaii and its islands as the "Islands of Stars" and in doing so have done much soul searching on whether "ideology" or "mythology" is what we, as temporary residents of this planet, have done with our institutions. More on this in another place.Nonetheless, it is now the site of the largest observatories in the world.
